Privacy Policy
Avel ("we," "us," or "our") provides a family academic-accountability application that helps parents supervise schoolwork and manage device access for linked student devices. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect information when you use the Avel mobile application and related services (the "Service").
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use Avel, we may collect:
- Account information — parent name, email address, authentication identifiers, family name, notification preferences, and legal acceptance records.
- Parent/student relationship information — student display names, grade levels, pairing codes, device identifiers, and family membership relationships managed by the parent account.
- Assignment and homework data — assignments, due dates, courses, descriptions, submission status, and related workflow data entered manually or synced from connected school systems you authorize.
- Uploaded photos and documents — homework images, PDFs, and other files submitted for an assignment, plus file metadata such as format, size, and upload timestamps.
- Device and app information — app version, device type, operating system, request logs, error diagnostics, and security-related metadata needed to operate the Service.
- Google Drive selected-file data — when you choose a Google Drive file to attach to homework, we receive metadata and content for that selected file only.
2. Google Drive data
Avel uses Google OAuth and requests the drive.file scope. Avel accesses only
files you explicitly select for use with Avel. Avel does not request access to your entire
Google Drive.
When you attach homework from Google Drive:
- You open Google Drive through Google’s picker and choose a specific file.
- Avel imports only the file you selected.
- The selected file may be copied into Avel’s storage so it can be submitted, reviewed, and verified as part of the homework workflow.
- We do not sell Google user data.
3. AI and homework verification
Uploaded homework may be processed by automated systems, including AI services, to help students and parents understand whether submitted work appears related to an assignment. Verification results are assistive feedback inside the app. They are not official school grades, disciplinary findings, or guarantees of accuracy. Automated systems can make mistakes.
4. How we use information
We use information to:
- Provide homework submission, verification, and parent review features
- Authenticate users and maintain secure sessions
- Apply optional study focus controls on authorized student devices
- Send notifications requested by parents
- Operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the Service
- Respond to support requests and enforce our Terms of Service
We do not sell personal information and do not use student information for advertising.
5. Data storage and subprocessors
Avel uses service providers to operate the Service. Depending on configuration, these may include:
- Render — application hosting and API infrastructure
- Resend — transactional email delivery
- S3-compatible object storage — secure storage of uploaded homework files
- OpenAI — automated homework analysis infrastructure
- Google APIs — Google sign-in and Google Drive file access for files you select
Service providers process information on our behalf under contractual obligations appropriate to their role.
6. Children and minors
Avel may be used by students, including minors, under a parent-created family account. Parents create accounts, add student profiles, configure settings, and supervise linked student devices. We collect student information to provide the Service at a parent’s direction. We do not knowingly use child data for advertising or sale of personal information.
7. Data retention
We retain account, family, assignment, and submission data while your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. When a parent deletes an account, we delete or de-identify associated records from active systems within a reasonable period, subject to backup cycles, legal obligations, and security requirements. Operational logs are retained for a limited time for security and reliability.
8. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including HTTPS for data in transit, access controls, and monitoring. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
9. Your choices
Parents can manage much of their information in the app, including:
- Updating profile and notification settings
- Disconnecting optional integrations where available
- Removing student profiles or deleting the parent account
- Contacting us with privacy questions or requests
Depending on your location, you may have additional privacy rights. Contact us to ask about access, correction, deletion, or export requests where applicable law provides them.
10. Account deletion
Parents can delete their account through the app. Account deletion initiates removal of associated family records and uploaded content from active systems, subject to the retention limits described above. You may also contact us to request account or data deletion assistance.
